The Tradition Continues, At Least In Part

Back when we were engaged, Erica and I started a new tradition. We decided to take off from work on the first day of the NCAA basketball tournament and watch all of the games. It was easier for me back then because I was still a professor, and I didn't teach on Thursdays. That was in March 2006.

In subsequent years we decided that one day of the tournament wasn't enough, so we started taking off from work for the first two days of games. Again it was easy for me, because the American Cancer Society was very generous with its paid time off.

That brings us to 2009. Given my new job, our vacation plans, and upcoming family visits, things didn't look too promising headed into this year's bout of March Madness, but like a No. 12 seed in an opening round game, we've rallied.

I will be taking half-days off from work on Thursday and Friday to watch the tournament. Erica is working from home, so she can keep the games on in the background and try not to be distracted by my (sometimes overly enthusiastic) commentary.

Let the Madness begin.
