Family Fight

It's usually not a good thing when family members are fighting, but Dad and Denise's visit to North Carolina over Valentine's Day weekend proved to be an exception to that rule.

Dad and I exchanged virtual punches throughout the weekend as part of a sometimes intense Wii boxing showdown. In deference to my father, I'll share the video below of dad's boxing victory shortly before he and Denise left to return home. It is a victory that he savored at the moment and again in follow-up emails and phone calls. Note that my prior victories have been explained away as "problems with the controller." Clearly, a rematch is in order.

Denise also was a Wii natural, showing off some serious bowling talent in her video game debut. Apparently the controller worked well for her from the start.

While Dad and Denise's visit started on
a down note with the cancellation of the Arlo Guthrie concert that they had come to town for, we obviously found other ways to entertain ourselves. Dad and Denise got to see my office for the first time, and after disinfecting ourselves following the visit to the Duke campus, we returned to the "Southern Part of Heaven" for a fun afternoon on Franklin Street followed by a Valentine's dinner at Top of the Hill.

Our waiter at Top of the Hill, a UNC student with longstanding Duke loyalties, was quite the entertainer. During our extended conversation with him, I discovered that one of my former UNC classmates was his English teacher in high school. The waiter had a Southern Eddie Haskell vibe going on, but I knew what he was really thinking when we discovered the common ground. Suffice it to say that this kid was once "hot for teacher."
